And this is why we love it…

Pre-Winter Crochet Week is at it’s mid-way point…I have to say it’s been so much fun on the CLF message board on Ravelry.com, and on our facebook page.

It seems I have a new local group, my best friend (who can crochet, but prefers I make the hats…sigh…”you’re quicker” she says…but at least she handspins lovely yarns and I get to play with soft and yummy goodness) and another friend who fell in love with Amigurumi and wanted to learn. We’ve decided this shall happen every tuesday at my best friend’s house (she is the famous pair of feet in my Bestest Friend/Loopy Lou sock pattern only $.50 for a download, special CLF Savings 😀 I am going to raise the price back to $4.00 after the holidays!). I have to say that this gal who’s initials really are CLF (It’s fate I tell you), is the BEST novice crochet student I have ever had. In our first lesson we went from chaining straight up to single crochets and shaping! She made the body of her piggy the first lesson, tonight? We made the snout, legs, ears and curly queue tail 😀  I made up the pattern on the fly, and she got it…every step of the way and tonight? She learned to READ the pattern! Talk about gratifying!

Front view of sir piggy wiggy…no eyes yet, she’s gonna get him all googlified…

And a rear-view of that cute little tail! This is her very very first ever crochet project!!!

We’ve had so much fun, and the best part as her guide, has been watching her sense of satisfaction and accomplishment along the road. In her “spare” time, she is a 4-H leader and has a gaggle of pre-teen and teen-aged girls at her heels, she wanted to learn to make critters for them as gifts…too  much fun!

That’s why I love crochet, with a simple tool (though if you ask an anthropologist they will explain the complexities of using a hook versus a straight object) and some long fiberous stuff we can make ANYTHING from beautiful lace to cute pigs and dolls. We’ve had community, laughter, the joy of eating good chocolate and watching someone feel just GREAT about learning something new, and finishing a project…she even wove in her ends. (Much better than her teacher who never bothers unless I have to…isn’t that what kids are for?)

Yes, I will be writing up this and  the other patterns I make up on the spot for my pal CLF, maybe I’ll make a little booklet 😀 They are quick and fun 😀

Hope you are enjoying your Pre-Winter/Pre-Sumer (OR heck Pre-Solstace Seasonal Shift) Week

Don’t forget you can still order the CLF Book hard copy or pdf download from the CLF Website! While you’re there you can check out the new gear 😀

Hooks & Boats

This is where hooks shall be whittled with Jimbo the greatest hook maker I know! The best part about him coming to the retreat (besides getting to see him cause he’s so awesome) is that he’s teaching how to whittle your own hooks, and both my hubby and my son’s best friend signed up to take his class! Hah! More hooks for me!

Fall has definately arrived at Cama, sadly we’re not getting huge amounts of fall color because of the way we were wet and then really dry, the poor leaves aren’t real sure about what to do! Yet we’re having the most glorious foggy mornings with crisp sunny days! WONDERFUL weather for a retreat! Now if the orcas show up like I ordered it’s all good!

I was taking care of details and logistics with Andrew from CWB and park staff yesturday. You wouldn’t believe how excited everyone is for the retreat to start! I brought Big Red the octopus, which I finally finished, just need to weave in ends, and they fell in love!

They are all plotting and scheming along side me about how to best do the exhibit and how to get as much participation as possible, and where to do fundraisers with it! It’s great to have our enthusiasm for our craft spill over to others! Ok, so most of these folks are like family to me, this park is really special and we have all put our heart and soul into it, so you know that makes a difference. But in some odd way I feel like I can finally bring two of the best things in my life together in one place! The CLF and Cama Beach, what a fabulous combo!

You still have time to sign up for the retreat but not much, I stop taking registrations Oct. 10. Even day pass folks get the fabulous goody bags so, if you can only make it for the day please come! To register go to our website!

CLF News: 2010 Crochet Awards Nominees for Best New Designer

Hey there CLFers and Crochetiers! Don’t forget that voting ends on March 22, this coming Monday! Then mark your calendars to find out who the winners are on the Getting Loopy Podcast with Mary Beth Temple on Monday April 19, 2010.  The show will be live and crazy, and we will make every effort to avoid technical difficulties, but no promises! (And for you Loopyites, yes there really is the “Evil British Lady” talking into your ear when you are a guest on that show, it’s not just a figment of MBT’s imagination!)

Best New Designer is my favorite category! Many of these people have crocheted for a long time, but have only recently started selling their designs. Others are young and tenancious getting out there early in life! So cool to have nominations in a variety of areas, from fashion and accessories to amigurumi! Way to go CLF for remembering that our craft is vast with potential! So, let’s just have a huge virtual round of applause for starting your publishing career to these folks! It’s not easy to write good patterns, and I think we should all be more appreciative of those who do!

Holiday Crochet: Something Quick & Cute!

Foamies!

Originally uploaded by Cerya (fulloffluff.com)

Well, we have less than 10 days until Christmas, so I’m looking for the quick and cute pattern that will help those last minute, “OMG I forgot so & so!” moments.

These are no ordinary scrubby! I think they are delightfully cute, and reminiscent of Ms. Pacman in a way…or the ghosts…one or the other, but they are really cute!

Happy Crocheting!

Christmas for Kitty

In fact her feline loved the first one she made so much, she had to make a second one! (The first met a kitty cat in a dark alley…)

The pattern is called Sea Horsin’ Around (see it in her projects pages)!

For those of you with kitties that just can’t get enough of the good toys, here’s a great stocking stuffer.

Though, I think if just stuffed with polyfill it’s a cool piece o Ami for the kids(including the big ones!) in your life that love sea critters too!

More holiday crafting ideas coming up, so stay tuned!
